The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
